Working on the Windows 7 Desktop
To create a desktop shortcut
1. Choose Start, point to All Programs and locate the program on the list of programs that you wish to
make a shortcut to the desktop.
2. Right-click on that program, and point to Send To and click on Desktop (create shortcut).
3. The shortcut appears on the desktop. Double-click the icon to open the application.
To arrange icons on the desktop
1. Right-click the desktop and choose View from the shortcut menu; be sure that Auto Arrange option isn't
selected.
2. To arrange desktop icons manually, just click any icon and drag it to another location.
3. Alternatively, you can right-click the Windows
7 desktop and from the shortcut menu,
choose Sort By and then click the criteria for
sorting your desktop shortcuts.
Note: To arrange icons on the Windows 7 desktop,
you need to place few icons on the desktop only
you will see the effects.
Start Menu
By default, the Start Menu is accessed by clicking
the Start button, located in the bottom left-hand
corner of the Windows Desktop screen.
Note: You can press the Windows key on the keyboard or the Ctrl+Esc keyboard shortcut to open the Start
Menu.
How to Launch the Start Menu Settings Window
In the Start Menu search box type 'start menu'. You will see one
result named 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties'.
Click on it and the configuration window will open.
OR
You can right-click on the Start Menu and select Properties.
The second tab of the 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' window contains the Start Menu settings. Click
on it to access its settings.
Change the Default Power Button Action
Make sure you are in the Start Menu tab of the 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' window. Here you can
customize what kind of action you want the Power button to perform: Shut down, Switch user, Sleep, Log
off, Lock or Restart.
Choose the default action you prefer and click on OK.
